Surely you have heard of the e-Sim and you are still not 100% aware of what it means or the impact on your daily life of this new technology. But first, do you know what a smartphone needs to be able to have an e-Sim? Renzo Ancaya, quality control manager of Xiaomi Peru, indicates that the device needs two things: the hardware, that is, a small integrated circuit that is placed on the electronic board of the device, and the software, which is responsible for enabling the functionality. The new Xiaomi 12T Pro has both in Peru.
Is it true that an e-SIM is useful when you are traveling for easier roaming and browsing without buying another chip? “This concept is linked to the possibility to store several e-SIM cards in the phone, so that only the e-SIM card of the country of residence needs to be activated when traveling to another country. It should be borne in mind that the e-SIM format must exist in the new country of residence and an e-SIM must have been previously purchased,” Ancaya clarifies.
The Xiaomi Peru specialist also helps us to clarify the main doubts about the advantages of this eSim:
To purchase an e-Sim you just need to scan the QR code provided by the operator. So you don’t have to wait for the receipt of the new physical SIM card to carry out the migration. “Another important advantage of e-Sims is the ability to use on different devices such as watches. While this opportunity has not yet been fully explored and exploited in the current market, it is a latent opportunity.”explains Ancaya.
Having an e-Sim is like having a virtual SIM card. This particularity allows multiple e-SIMs to be stored on the same phone, allowing, for example, the storage of virtual ‘chips’ from other countries with the option of instantly activating them if necessary. This particularity also makes it possible to easily separate an e-Sim for work and another for personal use.
Since it is effectively a virtual SIM card, there is no need for a SIM card slot initially, so it can be incorporated into wearables such as watches, bracelets, and in devices that can use an internet connection, such as car stereos.
When a phone is stolen, the physical SIM card can usually be removed to insert into another device to extract personal information. With the e-Sim this problem disappears as it cannot be deleted. However, it is worth noting that it is always recommended to use an unlocking mechanism on the mobile phone, be it a key, pattern or a biometric element.
In the case of the Xiaomi 12T Pro, it has the hardware to support e-SIM, and at the software level, the feature is also enabled for Peru. Please note that activating an e-SIM card in the Xiaomi 12T Pro disables the slot for a second physical SIM card, i.e. you can only use a physical SIM card in the 1 + 1 e-SIM slot or in its standard 2 traditional physical SIM cards.
An important question after knowing so many benefits for the user, is the e-Sim the future? “I think that the conventional SIM card will be present in our markets for a few more years, especially since it is a technology that is just being incorporated into high-end equipment such as the Xiaomi 12T Pro. However, little by little it will be seen how it evolves and becomes more and more becoming more compatible across mobile and wearable segments”, says the Xiaomi Peru specialist.
